Gretel vanishes and it is up to her father and brother to find her. Each secretly believe her disappearance is their fault. Where’s Gretel is a story about the mystery of family love and the lengths we go for each other. Story and art by Hansel Perez.

Gretel

Gretel likes to wander the jungle by herself. She spends the day searching for small treasures. She may seem shy, but she is the most confident person you’ll ever meet. Gretel is mute and communicates by using her hands.

Hansel

Hansel lives to impress friends and as a result, fails to see what makes him special. What he lacks in confidence, he makes up for in imagination. Sometimes that imagination can get the best of him, though. Hansel must overcome self doubt and access inner courage to help find his sister Gretel who runs away after friends of his make fun of her.

Papá

A gentle father to his children. He spends most of the day cutting down trees so he can sell firewood in town.

The Duende

Duendes are spirit beings that exist in empty spaces. They are very charming when one first meets them. However, they only make one-sided deals. When they have to collect a debt, they are all business.

The Jaguar

An ageless creature. She is real, but also occupies the spirit realm. She is indifferent to everyone’s story. Her presence will influence Papá’s character the most. Duendes fear her. Papá fears her. The jaguar fears nothing.

Lucecitas

Everything in nature emanates an almost imperceptible light and sound that signals its emotional or physical condition. In European traditions these are referred to as will-o'-the-wisps. Lucecitas, as they are known in Latin America, are incorrectly thought to signal the location of treasure. The truth is, lucecitas are attempts by nature to communicate with us. Only the very sensitive can see or hear them.
